I wish that all people were as I am. But each person has their own gifts from God, the one this and the other that one.
Despising your brother is a frequent full blown evil that still persists today. Yes showing contempt for one another is on the rise.
The Holy Spirit tried to warn us about this:
Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God.
Sadly, showing contempt for your brother persists, especially contempt for those who are more common, less distinguished, and less gifted. Those who have amassed a great deal of knowledge and posses keen judgment usually look down from their presumptuous height on others who barley get by with limited knowledge. Those who have achieved a position of honor in church are accustomed to being condescending to those who are not as keen as they are. Clever people sometimes conduct themselves scandalously toward the slow, sluggish ways of others. This is a sin.
This sin does a lot of damage. It is a knife that slices into two souls at the same time. it wounds two hearts with one thrust. It inflicts arrogance and overconfidence on the person who strikes the blow. And it discourages and diminishes the one attacked.
To combat this sin, we must confront it with the truth of God's word.
God's word teaches that no one possesses anything that they have not been given.
This truth completely changes the way you look at yourself and as well as your brothers.
Are we not all empty vessels ?
There is nothing about our content we have earned. It has simply been entrusted to us.
Keep in mind.
The more you are given the more is expected of you. This imposes an obligation on you. You need to be more disciplined in your living. You are the standard bearer in the army of the less fortunate. Greater demands are placed on your strength.
This can expose you to great danger.
Recall in Matthew the Parable of the Talents. You will be held accountable.
When one of the servants did nothing with his gift;
But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. ....
And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
God is the sole dispenser of all intellectual, physical, and spiritual gifts. They flow from him alone.
Rather than despise your brother, value the smallest gift that you detect in him. Honor what God has blessed him with.
This attitude will cause the less gifted not to be envious or to complain he has been given so much less.
This will also cause a reverence for God and for one another.
This is the way it should be.
